Class 09 — Career Research: Verify the AI Version
Date: TODO · Slides: TODO
Objectives
Section titled “Objectives”- Verify AI-generated career claims against the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
- Match AI tool categories to job-search tasks instead of using one tool for everything.
- Build a question list for the most important step: talking to a real human in the field.
Agenda (60 min)
Section titled “Agenda (60 min)”| Time | Block |
|---|---|
| 0–5 | Warm-up: AI-weirdness shares. |
| 5–12 | Frame: yesterday’s resume skills + Class 2’s verification loop = today. AI wrote you a career profile in Class 7 — is it true? |
| 12–32 | Verification lab: for the career each student chose in Class 7, generate an AI profile (pay, growth outlook, education, hardest parts). Then verify each claim against the OOH. Mark every claim: confirmed / wrong / unverifiable. Share the tally — classes typically confirm ~half. |
| 32–42 | Tool-match sprint (absorbs the old tool-types module): stations or pairs — same job-search task done with the right tool type: chatbot for drafting, image gen for a project portfolio thumbnail, voice/transcription for a mock-interview recording, research chat for OOH summaries. One line each: best tool for the job, and its privacy/cost caveat. |
| 42–55 | Human loop: AI can’t tell you what the job feels like. Students draft 5 questions for a career-talk with someone real (family, teacher network, local business) — AI critiques the list, humans answer the questions. |
| 55–60 | Exit ticket: one AI career claim that didn’t survive verification, and what the official data actually said. |
Key terms
Section titled “Key terms”- Ground truth — official primary data (BLS), where verified claims live.
- Tool-to-task matching — chatbots ≠ image generators ≠ transcription; pick by job.
- Informational interview — asking humans what models can’t know.
Seven-Question connection
Section titled “Seven-Question connection”Q4 (accuracy) closes its loop: Class 2 verified facts, today verifies advice about your future — the version where being wrong costs you a year of schooling. Verification is the same skill either way.
Homework / log entry
Section titled “Homework / log entry”Complete the verification table (claim → AI said → OOH says → verdict) — it’s evidence for the Final Challenge. Bonus: actually send the career-talk questions to one human.
Teacher notes
Section titled “Teacher notes”- Time pressure? This is first on the shrink list: run one career as a whole-class demo, assign the rest as homework, keep the human-loop block.
- Career-talk network: a class Google Form + your school’s career office can arrange 15-minute phone/virtual chats.
